On initiation of pre-set electronic timer fuze, the flash from the fuze activates the SR 252 composition in situ pressed on primer adopter. This in term fires the primary charge of rifle propellant powder kept in the charge bag enclosed in the primary body. This flash from the primary charge is passed through central hole of baffle plate to all the four canisters arranged in a row beneath it. The canister is having a flash transmission tube welded at the centre with a primed cambric and thin tin tube rolled over the flash tube. The flash from the primary charge ignites the primed cambric which produces sufficient heat to heat up the thin tin tube. The heat is passed on the smoke composition and starts the generation of smoke from fast burning composition and a dense smoke is generated.
The shells are normally used to mask the movement or redeployment of own forces from enemy observation, thereby neutralizing direct enemy fire.
