Bomb 51 mm smoke is an emission type screening smoke Ammn capable of producing effective screen for a period of 2 minutes over wide area. Used for facilitating tactical deployment of troops and screening from enemy fire. Also can be used for target indication.
The bomb is fired from 51 mm Mortar, smooth bore, muzzle loading weapon. The ammunition is provided with delay element of around 10 sec to facilitate emission of the smoke just on landing. The bomb produces thick screen of smoke over wide area within 5 sec at a range anywhere between 180 metre to 850 metre.

Quality control technique and quality assurance measures ensure desired performance of the Ammunition Components and sub-assemblies like tail unit, primary cartg, augmenting cartg, delay unit etc. are subjected to test/proof before final assembly. Apart from standard checks and tests, a lot of 1000 Nos. is subjected to functional (dynamic) proof. The Ammn is accepted on double sampling plan with 4% AQL for major defects as listed in the quality assurance documents. Quality assurance system is based in accordance with ISO standard ISO 9001, IS-2500/BS 6000 and related Specn JSS/BIS/IND (ME) and store specn/drawing.
The Ammn is safe in all respects during handling, operation and transportation.

Packing consists of inner and outer packages .The inner package is HDPE/LDPE container. 6 such containers are packed in canvas bag with shoulder strap. 4 canvas bags are then packed in wooden/steel box. Gross weight of each box containing 24 bombs is 46 Kgs.
