Ordnance Factories Institute of Learning (OFIL), Ambarnath is one of the eight (8) OFILs established by Ordnance Factory Board, Kolkata (Govt. of India, Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production) in the year 1996 for imparting training to and undertaking developmental activities in respect of Group ?C? Non-Gazetted and Non-Industrial personnel employed in seven Ordnance Factories and their Allied Establishments located in Western Region. These Factories are OFA, MPF, AFK, HEF, OFDR, OFBh & OFV. OFIL, Ambarnath has Core Competence in Mech. Engg. (Maintenance), Mechatronics & Mech. Engg. (Design) including AutoCAD and is also the nodal centre for conducting Induction Training for Direct Recruit C/M II (T) (Mech.) and (Design) of all the Ordnance Factories.
OFIL, Ambarnath is at present located within the premises of Machine Tool Prototype Factory (MPF) at Ordnance Estate. Ambarnath is situated in Thane District of Maharashtra State on the Mumbai-Pune Railway line. Visitors and participants from outstation can alight at Kalyan, Thane, Kurla (LT Terminus), Dadar or Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)? from where local trains can be boarded to reach Ambarnath. Auto-rickshaws ply between Ambarnath and Ordnance Estate. Bus services are also available.
OFIL, Ambarnath has its own Hostels where boarding/lodging facilities (including messing facilities on contract basis) to outstation participants are provided. Boarding/Lodging facilities are also provided at Inspection Bungalow, Officers? Mess and NGOs? Mess depending upon requirement. For the entertainment and development of participants lodged at OFIL Hostels, facilities for indoor games are provided in addition to Journals and Newspapers in Reading Room and Television in Common Hall. Apart from above for their physical fitness a Physical Fitness Center ?MULTIGYM? has been inaugurated on 27/08/03 by DGOF & Chairman Shri D K Dutta. Participants lodged at Hostels are supposed to maintain Hostel discipline and are not supposed to consume liquor or other intoxicating drugs or drinks during their stay.
OFIL is housed in a two storeyed building having adequate number of Class Rooms, Seminar Hall, Conference Room, Hydraulics & Pneumatics Lab and IT Lab. Hydraulics & Pneumatics Lab is a unique facility available only at OFILAM among other OFILs. Action is in pipeline for setting up a Maintenance Lab also.
OFIL is under the administrative control of Regional Director.? He is assisted by three Group ?A? officers, two in the rank of Jt. General Manager, one in the rank of Dy. General Manager and 7 Group ?B? Officers.
OFILAM has a number of Officers and Staff who are rendering Faculty Services for various Courses. To supplement the expertise in certain fields, services of personnel from Factories and Allied Establishments are utilized for some Courses. Expertise of some External Faculty is also utilized for specialized subjects. OFILAM is also encouraging Staff & Officers of Ordnance Factories to share their experience and expertise on our scheduled Courses.

Training and Courses
CM (OP): OFIL has started induction course for CM (OP) from 2003-04 in a regular basis. 115 no CM (OP) 1st batch joined at OFILAM on 30th June 2003. First 6 month they are exposed to various procedures in the field of Administration, Material Management, Quality, General Engg. & IT. Apart from above educational cum Industrial visit both in Govt. & Private factories are arranged. CM (OP) are also addressed by eminent guest faculties on behavioral topics as well as in specially technical subjects for their overall development, OFIL arranges various seminars debates & Presentation. In a nutshell, OFIL provides appropriate environment to develop their personal skill & technical fields to prove their worth in life. Next 6 months they are trained in their technical trades at respective OFILs.
The Core Competence Areas (CCAs) of OFIL, Ambarnath are Mechanical Maintenance, Mechatronics & Mechanical Design including AutoCAD and Hydraulics & Pneumatics. Courses conducted in these areas are open to participation for personnel from Ordnance Factories only all over India.
Courses in other areas:
Apart from the Courses in Core Competence Areas, OFIL Ambarnath conducts courses in areas such as Information Technology, Material Management, Administration, Quality Management, and Safety etc. These Courses are mainly meant for personnel from OFs & Allied Establishments in Western Region. However, seats are allotted to other Units as well on specific requirement. Most of the Courses are of one week?s duration; but some are of 2 or 3 weeks? duration such as Courses on Information Technology and AutoCAD.
Long duration Courses:
OFIL, Ambarnath is the nodal Training Centre for Induction Training of Direct Recruit Chargeman Gr. II (Tech.) in the disciplines of Mechanical Engg. & Design for a duration of 12 weeks. This induction training consists of training in three independent Modules viz. Factory Administration, Stores & Provisioning, and Technology, apart from project work in any of the Ordnance Factories and exposure on Information Technology. On completion of training, examinations are conducted and the result of the examinations is communicated to the respective OFs and OFB, Kolkata. Successful completion of training is a pre-requisite for these personnel for satisfactory completion of their probation. Three meritorious personnel from each batch are awarded Merit Certificates and mementos.
From the feedback given by the participants it is understood that our Courses are useful, meet the objectives, and are conducted very well. The Faculty Rating is also between "VERY GOOD" and "EXCELLENT".
Audit of Training:
OFIL, Ambarnath has been nominated as the auditing agency for FTIs of seven Ordnance Factories in Western Region.

Following training aids are available to instructors for effective training and communication to the trainees.
A well-established Hydraulic & Pneumatic Lab is also available for practice and demonstration to the trainees & instructors.

Pre & Post-Training Assessment:
Post-training assessment is conducted for every course in order to assess the improvement gained by participants in their knowledge/skill after undergoing the course and cash awards are presented to first three meritorious participants.
OFILAM is bringing out a quarterly in-house journal named ?Prashikshan? in which informative write ups contributed by Faculty Members and other officers/staff of OFs and other Establishments are published. Till now 15 issues of this Journal have been brought out. Project Work/Case Studies undertaken by Direct Recruit C/M II (Tech.) as part of their Induction Training are also published in this Journal for the benefit of O.F. Personnel.
To promote Hindi as official RAJBHASHA OFILAM has started ?PRATIBIMB? a bi-monthly newsletter from Jan 2004. 1st issue was released on 26th Jan 2004 Republic Day by RD/OFILAM.
OFIL, Ambarnath has brought out four Compilations, namely:
"Handbook on Terminal Benefits",
"Service Law Glossary" and
These compilations have received wide appreciation from officials of OFB and General Managers of a number of OFs. Another compilation titled ?Pearls of Wisdom? is under publication. ??OFILAM has resolved to bring out more such books in future.
In a nutshell, with the co-operation of all concerned including General Managers, Heads of Establishments, MDOs, Training/HRD Officers and Faculty Members from Sister Units, External Sources, OFIL, Ambarnath is marching ahead for fulfilling the training needs of a large section of the employees in general and NG/NIE Group ?C? Staff of OFs in particular and we are indebted to all of them who gave us a helping hand in fulfilling this requirement. We expect the same or increased level of support and co-operation from them in the days to come for making available the benefits and facilities of training to all the employees who fall within our training responsibility.
